Oval to elongated red-orange berries, 1–2cm

Growing on thorny arching rose stems

Five sepals visible at tip (sometimes dropped)

Multiple small hairy seeds inside — must strain

Pinnate leaves with 5–7 toothed leaflets

Harvest Notes

Harvest after first frost if possible. Must use a fine strainer — the hairy seeds cause severe internal irritation.

Uses

Rose hip syrup, jelly, tea, wine. Exceptionally high in vitamin C.

Equipment Needed

Container, fine strainer or jelly bag — ESSENTIAL for removing seeds.

Storage

Process within a week. Syrup keeps refrigerated for a month.

Lookalikes

No dangerous lookalikes. All other wild roses also produce edible hips.
